With rising urbanization, industrialization, and vehicular emissions, air quality is deteriorating, leading to severe health risks and environmental degradation.

Understanding Air Pollution
What is Air Pollution?
Air pollution occurs when harmful substances, including particulate matter (PM2.5 & PM10), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), carbon monoxide (CO), ozone (O₃), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), are released into the atmosphere.

Major Sources of Air Pollution:
Vehicle Emissions: Diesel and petrol engines release toxic gases and fine particulates, worsening urban air quality.
Industrial & Power Plant Emissions: Factories and coal-fired plants release sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and heavy metals, contributing to acid rain and respiratory diseases.
Crop Burning & Biomass Burning: Agricultural waste burning releases black carbon, which accelerates global warming and reduces air quality.
Construction & Road Dust: Unregulated construction activities contribute to high particulate matter (PM10) levels, leading to severe lung and heart diseases.
Household Pollution: Burning wood, charcoal, and kerosene for cooking and heating releases toxic indoor pollutants, disproportionately affecting rural communities.

Health Impacts of Air Pollution
Respiratory Diseases:
Asthma & Bronchitis – Exposure to fine particulates and ozone increases the risk of chronic respiratory conditions.
Lung Cancer & COPD Long-term exposure to pollutants like PM2.5 is linked to lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Cardiovascular Diseases:
Air pollution contributes to heart attacks, high blood pressure, and strokes by damaging blood vessels and increasing inflammation.
Neurological Effects: Studies suggest that prolonged exposure to polluted air increases the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, cognitive decline, and developmental disorders in children. <b.impact on="" children="" &="" pregnant="" women:Exposure to pollutants during pregnancy is linked to low birth weight, premature births, and developmental impairments.
COVID-19 & Air Pollution: Poor air quality weakens lung function, making individuals more susceptible to severe respiratory infections and complications from diseases like COVID-19.
